The editorial reiterated the “Colored” community’s enduring quest to have the question of their identity resolved, namely whether they were Europeans by virtue of the nationality of their fathers or Africans by virtue of their mothers’ identity. The editorial noted that this question had been posed to Mr. Oliver Lyttelton, then Secretary of State for the Colonies (October 1951–July 1954), when he visited Northern Rhodesia nearly two years before the Legislative Council debate in question. The Euro-African delegation asked him point blank: “Are we Europeans or are we Africans?” Mr. Lyttelton answered: “You are British protected persons.” The Euro-Africans then said to him that if they were the children of British men they must take their fathers’ nationality. But Mr. Lyttelton told them that as children born out of wedlock they were illegitimate and ranked “constitutionally the same as Africans.” According to the editorial, Mr. Lyttelton’s reply presented a paradox: politically “Coloreds” and “Euro-Africans” were grouped with Africans but judicially they were recognized as separate people.
